Lower Antelope Canyon
Lower Antelope Canyon
Direction: The Lower Antelope Canyon is located north off AZ-98, few miles southeast of Page (just passed the parking lot of the Upper Antelope Canyon, a short distance before you get to the Navajo Power Plant).
Watch for the sign on the side of the road, there turn north and soon turn left, drive down to the parking and fee area.

Lower Antelope Canyon. The Navajo name for this slot canyon is Hasdeztwazi (means: spiral rock arches). It is not as famous as its 'brother', the Upper Antelope Canyon, but in my opinion this one is more adventurous.

After you paid the fee a guide will walk you to the entrance of the canyon. On your way there you will see a small memorial (a sign remembering ten visitors which didn't survive a flash flood in 1979) and a footprint of an ancient dinosaur.
You will enter the fascinating world of this canyon down through a narrow slot in the surface (right photo) with the help of metal stairs. Only at a few spots the canyon will open up a little bit but is mostly only 2 - 3 feet wide.
Take your time and enjoy the many interesting sandstone formations and the amazing colors.
Close to the end of the walkable area of the canyon you will see the 'back exit', a metal staircase leading out of the canyon. Don't use it at that time but continue the way for some more yards till you reach a steep and deep drop of the canyon floor. There is no way down without a rope - it's time to turn around and go back. You can exit the canyon using the stairs at the 'back exit' (and walk back on the surface) or go back through the canyon the same way you came in.

Tipps for photographers. The best time to take pictures in this slotcanyon is probably mid afternoon when the direct sunlight doesn't shine deep into the canyon. Then you get softer light.
The Lower Antelope Canyon is not as dark as the Upper - a flashlight is not necessary.
Do not get any direct sunlight (or sky) on your pictures - it would ruin the depth and softness of the light on the sandstone walls.
Due to walking in the sandy canyon there is fine sand in the air. Protect your camera and equipment as good as possible from it and use canned air for cleaning.
A commercial permit is required for commercial photography. Please contact: Navajo Film Office, P.O. Box 2310, Window Rock, AZ, 86515 or call (928) 871-6655/6656.
