Upper Antelope Canyon
Upper Antelope Canyon
Direction: The Upper Antelope Canyon is located south off AZ-98, few miles southeast of Page (a short distance before you get to the Navajo Power Plant with the very high chimneys). Watch for the sign on the side of the road.

Elevation: 4,000 feet

Upper Antelope Canyon. The Navajo call this slotcanyon Tse bighanilini (means: the place where water runs through rocks). It is more famous and better known than its 'brother' - the Lower Antelope Canyon.

Tipps for photographers. The best time to take pictures in this slotcanyon is around noon (probably from 10:30 am till 1:30 pm) when the sunlight comes straight into the canyon.
I recommend to bring a flashlight, enough films, extra batteries and a tripod as well as a cable release for longer exposure to catch the light in an amazing yellow and red. Do not get any direct sunlight (or sky) on your pictures - it would ruin the depth and softness of the light on the sandstone walls. If you are using a good digital cam go with the nightshot function.
Due to walking in the sandy canyon there is fine sand in the air. Protect your camera and equipment as good as possible from it and use canned air for cleaning.
A commercial permit is required for commercial photography. Please contact: Navajo Film Office, P.O. Box 2310, Window Rock, AZ, 86515 or call (928) 871-6655/6656.

A last tipp: I also suggest to bring some drinking water during the hot season.
