PARIA CANYON -
VERMILION CLIFFS WILDERNESS
weather
Rainfall.
This area (incl. Coyote Buttes and The Wave) is known for low precipitation.
The statistics for the near city of Page show 6.74 inch rain per year. The
month with the most rainfall is October (0.99 inch) and the month with the least
is June (0.14 inch).
So rain is not very common but possible. It takes place mostly in form of
short and strong showers and thunderstorms.
Temperature.
You have to know that temperatures can easily exceed 100ºF in the
summer. The heat of the high standing sun and the reflection of it from
the rocky terrain combine to extreme conditions.
If you are not used to these temperatures you should not plan to hike in
this area during the summer months or start your hike at sunrise and return
till noon (hottest time: between 2 and 4 pm).
It can freeze at night and snow a few times during the winter.
So it is possible to 'conquer' this area all year long but spring and fall are
the main seasons for hiking.
In my opinion the best time is between mid April and the end of May (May and
June for a hike in the long and deep Paria Canyon).
Temperatures are pleasant and plants have not yet experienced the heat
of the summer sun.
