former Squaw Peak Mountain

On April 17, 2003, the Squaw Peak Mountain was renamed to Piestewa Peak in honor of private first class Lori Piestewa, a Hopi Native American from Tuba City, AZ, who was killed in combat during the war in Iraq 2003 as the first female Native American.
Please note that many maps will carry the old name (Squaw Peak) for some time and many infos on the internet will be still postet under this name.

a few more minutes to the summit Recreation Area. Around the parking lots are more than a dozen ramadas (with drinking water and barbeque places) and many restrooms.
The easiest access to the Summit Trail (#300) is from the first parking lots. The trail begins on the south side of the 2,608 ft high peak (look for the signs).

The hike. Be aware that this trail is very popular and used by hundreds of hikers a day (on weekends even more!). The summit trail #300 (look for the sign) starts on the northside of the first parking lot on your left. Coming up are several switchbacks. After a 1/4 of a mile you reach a junction with other trails (one of them 'trail #300A' returns to Squaw Peak Drive). Stay on #300 to the summit. Half way up (0.6 mile) you reach the junction with the Circumference Trail #302 (which goes north). at the summit From here on the trail becomes rougher and even steeper after 0.9 mile (see upper-right picture). Then you reach a notch where you can see the north peak (to the left, 2,580 ft, usually ascended because of easier access) and the highest summit (to your right, 2,608 ft). Take a few minutes and enjoy an incredible view over the valley, the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, Downtown Phoenix (to the southwest) and the Camelback Mountain (only from the higher peak, southeast).
The easiest way to get back to your car is to go back the same trail. Please make sure that you watch your steps (you might be a little bit tired).

Tipp: Smaller steps are easier to control and also easier on your knees.

Note: You hike at your own risk. Information found on this site is not guaranteed to be correct. Please be aware that you are in the desert. Wear appropriate clothing and shoes and bring plenty of water.
