HIKING IN RESERVATIONS
& permits
Before you go hiking or backpacking in one of the many Indian Reservations in
Arizona you should know that there might be some restrictions to it.
Some areas might be restricted to natives only (f.e. sacred land), in some you
can only hike with a native guide, in some reservations you have to have a
permit ahead for hiking (and overnight camping) and in some areas you can
hike without restrictions.
You have to know when you enter a reservation and what kind of restrictions
there apply. Please contact the tribe (tribal office) for details.
Below I will share some information I collected on my trips and hikes in the
Navajo Reservation. These are my experiences and is not an official
information page.
NAVAJO RESERVATION
What you should know:
- There is one 'basic' rule:
You have to have a permit (tribal fee) ahead for hiking on
reservation land and camping (outside official designated campgrounds)
where hiking is allowed.
- There are a few areas where you don't need an 'extra' permit for
hiking. Here are a some examples:
- Antelope Canyons. You pay the tribal fee and the entrance fee
at once.
- Navajo National Monument. No fee/permit for the short hikes
to overviews on the rim. No fee for the guided tours to the Betatakin
ruins. But: Permits for the backpacking & overnight tour to the Keet Seel
ruins are available at the visitor center. Reservations are
necessary.
- Canyon de Chelly National Monument. The only hiking trail into the
canyon without permit/fee is the White House Ruins trail. Any other
'exploration' of the canyon below the rim has to be done with a native
guide. Other restrictions may apply off the paved trails along the
viewpoints at the rims.
- Having a permit does not mean that you are allowed on private
properties. Stay away from them and respect the privacy of the people
who live there.
- If you don't know about restrictions or what kind of restrictions
apply to an area please ask park officials (in Tribal Parks or National
Monuments) or call a tribal office (see the link below).
How and where can you get the "Navajo Nation - Backcountry Use Permit" for hiking,
backpacking or overnight camping on the Navajo Reservation or get information
about restrictions:
