Entrance Fees
A $20 entrance fee per car to the National Park or $10 per person
for pedestrians and bicyclists. The permit is good for 7 days on both rims.
Special passes (including the National Parks Pass) are available at the
entrance stations.
The National Parks Pass for only $50 is a good investment if you are going
to visit several parks within a year. You can purchase it also online through
the official website of the
National Park Service and receive it by mail, or get more infos.
Permits
All overnight visitors to backcountry areas must first obtain a permit from
the Backcountry Office. Please make reservations well in advance for the most
popular campgrounds on the Bright Angel and Kaibab Trails.
You can put your name on a waiting list for backcountry camping or a mule ride
if you arrive without a permit. This might work well but don't count on it.
During busy seasons you might have to wait 1, 2 or more days before you
get a permit.
The price for a permit (spring 2003) is $10, plus $5 per person for each night
camped 'below the rim' ($5 per group for each night camped 'above the rim').
Backcountry hikers can also purchase a frequent hiker membership for 1 year.
Day hikes and overnight stays at the Phantom Ranch don't require a permit. For
reservations for the Phantom Ranch (to eat or sleep) call (303) 297-2757
well in advance.
Reservations at the Backcountry Office can be done per mail or in person
(not by phone!).
