Introduction
Welcome to my special about one of the most stunning and most visited
natural wonders of our world - the Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA.
Basic Facts
The Grand Canyon is 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide and
nearly one mile deep. Nearly two billion years are represented
in the Canyon's exposed layers, about two-fifths of the earth's
estimated age.
The Grand Canyon became a National Park in 1919 and
five million people visit the Grand Canyon each year.
The highest elevation at the canyon is 9,100 feet and the lowest point
is 1,200 feet. The Grand Canyon is home to 1,500 flowering plants,
305 bird species, 88 mammal species, 26 species of fish and
58 species of amphibians and reptiles.
The Paiute Indians called it Kaibab or Mountain Lying Down. The
Spanish called it 'Gran Caňon'. John Wesley Powell explored it
in wooden boats in 1869 and called it the 'Grand Canyon'.
