THE PAST YEAR
a look back
(New Year's Eve 2002)
It’s the last day of a year, New Year’s Eve, and I am sitting in the desert,
writing this.
365 days past by - a year goes to the end. What happened this year? What
happened to me this year? What happened to people I know?
It’s the day many of us are thinking back. What did we achieve? How did the
ways of life lead us? Did we follow the signs we were supposed to see? Did we
reach the goals we set a year ago?
The past year affected us by the terrible 9-11 of 2001 - in many ways. Are
the laughters we hear again as loud as they were 24 months ago? Are the smiles
as bright? We try - I do too. The worldwide economy is still weak. Many lost
their jobs or have other problems connected to 9-11. And we are standing on
the doorstep to another war.
Was it a good year? It was the year of the echo to the year before. As well as
every day is the echo of the days we past in our lives. We have to be aware
of that. The chain of moments, of days and years.
In my opinion there is no good or bad year. But every year has to be a year
we learn from. Let us not forget the mistakes we made and let us find
the strength not to make the same mistakes again. It is up to us that the
next year will be a better one. We do affect other lives not only with our
actions but also with our thoughts - and smiles. Be aware of the power of
your smile!
About a week ago I saw a little girl discovering the beauty of a rainbow in
the sky. It was the brightest smile I have seen this year. It put a smile
onto my face too - and I was thankful for it.
Imagine the smile of a little child and you will smile. Show this smile to
others and they will do the same.
Looking forward to the coming year I will call it 'the year of the rainbow' -
hoping that there will be brighter smiles again.
... a smiling gb ☻
