BUCKSKIN GULCH TRAILHEADThis trailhead is one of three access points to the slot canyon Buckskin Gulch, the longest and deepest slot canyon in the Southwest. Its length of 12 miles and the high cliff walls (up to 500 feet at the end/confluence with the Paria River) make it outstanding. From here it is another 2.5 miles to the Wire Pass TH and parking area. |

COYOTE BUTTES NORTH TRAILHEADS |
WIRE PASS TRAILHEADThis trailhead is the most frequent access point to the Coyote Buttes North and The Wave and the recommended trailhead by the Rangers. A hike from here to The Wave takes about 1.5 hours (one way). The parking area is located on the right (west side) of the House Rock Valley Road. There you can find a bathroom (the small building) too. The trailhead is across the road (left photo).
The Wire Pass TH is also a popular trailhead for day hikes into the
very narrow and interesting slot canyons Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch
and for hikes into the Paria Canyon which take usually several days. The 'Permit Point' (right photo) for these hikes is located just behind the Wire Pass TH sign. This 'Permit and Pay Point' is to be used only for day hikes into Wire Pass and Buckskin Gulch and NOT a 'Permit Point' for the Coyote Buttes North area (incl. The Wave). |
|
Another access point to the Coyote Buttes North and The Wave is
The Notch Trailhead. To get there drive farther south (pass the
Wire Pass TH) on the House Rock Valley Road. After 1.2 miles
you will cross the border from Utah to Arizona and after another
mile (2.2 miles past Wire Pass TH) you will get to The Notch TH. |
THE NOTCH TRAILHEADThis trailhead is not as visible as the Wire Pass TH. You might have to look for it. It is located on the east side of the road. You can park your car between the trees. To hike from here to The Wave you have to go up (east) the trail and cross the rugged Cockscomb mountain ridge at the Notch. This might be a little bit difficult because the trail is not very visible. As soon as you reach the top of the Notch you can see the Top Rock mountain in the distance. This hike into the South Coyote Buttes is not as easy as from the Wire Pass TH. It should take about 1 hour more (about 2.5 hours total, one way) to get to The Wave from this trailhead but this hike has also an advantage - you might be just by yourself. Note: A hike from The Notch TH is recommended only for experienced Coyote Buttes North hikers! At the Paria Canyon Contact Station you can get barely any info about this trail - if any at all. Do not use this trail if you have not been at The Wave before. |
